Why we built this
As ordinary citizens, we used to struggle with Macau law. The legal system blends five major codes, preserving Portuguese-era law while layering on a vast body of locally enacted statutes under the Basic Law.
After the handover, existing laws were modified, adapted, and repealed to fit Macau's social development and the "one country, two systems" framework. Tracing a single legal question through this layered system was painful — so we built this site.
The uniqueness of Macau law
Under "one country, two systems", Macau's legal system is unlike anywhere else. This service uses an AI large language model (LLM) combined with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to instantly look up answers from these sources:
- Portuguese-era codes that remain in force (Civil Code, Penal Code, Commercial Code, etc.)
- The Basic Law of the Macau SAR and its derivative legal regime
- New and amended local laws enacted after the handover
